The article that ran in the Thursday, January 20, Bulletin regarding the Multicultural Honor Society (MCHS) initiated important discussion on campus and between the Office of Student Life and its Unity Multicultural Education Center (UMEC). As a result, we would like to address the purpose and application process of MCHS.
As a Jesuit institution with a mission centered upon care for others and therefore equality, social justice and inclusivity, the Multicultural Honor Society (MCHS) is very important to Gonzaga. Consistent with the University's Commitment to Human Diversity, the Unity Multicultural Education Center (UMEC) and all of its programs are open to all students.
MCHS is a program of Gonzaga's Unity Multicultural Education Center (UMEC) and is in the midst of building its identity, which is why discussions around the application process and selection criteria began. The primary purpose of the Unity Multicultural Education Center (UMEC) is to proactively assist and provide leadership that supports an inclusive campus community, enhances cultural competency and increases diversity awareness through educational programs, retention initiatives, events, celebrations and various workshops. UMEC welcomes all to participate in its events and programs in an effort to collectively learn, actively promote social justice and encourage inclusion and equity.
MCHS exists to honor traditionally underrepresented students as well as all other Gonzaga students who not only excel academically, but also demonstrate a commitment to diversity, multicultural education and community service. As stated on the MCHS application, its purpose is to promote high scholarship; to develop an appreciation for scholarly work and the academic endeavors of others; to recognize leadership and service; and to value the significance of multiculturalism. Any student may apply so that all members of the community have the opportunity to "reap the educational and experiential benefits" as stated in the University's Commitment to Human Diversity statement.
In addition to revising its application in November, the Center is currently revising the MCHS bylaws as well.
The MCHS application states that membership in MCHS is open to undergraduate students who:
Have completed a minimum of 45 units with a cumulative GPA of 3.2 (Transfer students are eligible upon completion of 16 units with 3.2 GPA or above).
Are in good standing with the University, enrolled in a degree program, and who demonstrate or exhibit potential for leadership and service.
Have an interest in multicultural diversity issues.
The above criteria is evaluated, in part, by asking applicants to submit a "personal statement" that shares their views on diversity, community involvement and their plans for contributing to a multicultural campus environment.
We encourage all interested students to contact UMEC at 313-5836 to more specifically discuss MCHS and obtain an application.
