I sit here at my computer …somewhat speechless … tears running down my eyes … like something I have never thought would happen has slapped me right in the face. I admit, I have watched the last few WCC games in a bar in the city of Milwaukee, not too many Zag fans to spare. I lost my voice to the cause that unfortunately fell short. The one thing I did not lose and will NEVER lose is the belief in this Gonzaga team.
As a Gonzaga fan for the past 24 years, losing is a new word for me; in fact, for all of us. Great coaching, great players and the lack of quality competition have jaded our view on what it really takes to be the best in the country. Like spoiled children we were handed everything we wanted and like any child would we took it, no real questions asked. We have received the best treatment any student could receive. The problem I fear that we face is the idea of adversity. Many of you have no idea what this word means, nor do you grasp how it relates to this Gonzaga team. For me it started about four years ago, that this idea that we are somehow entitled to WCC wins, championships, NCAA berths is absolutely deplorable. All I hear is whining and crying from people when what we really need is to open our eyes to the beauty of Gonzaga basketball; only then will you truly be able to embrace what this team stands for.
Gonzaga basketball, unlike the cowards on the other side of the state (not Seattle U), is known for our nose-to-the-grindstone mentality. This program started with the greatest point guard ever laying the foundation and the greatest coach ever over-seeing the construction. This immaculate basketball team is by far nowhere from finished. The competition has grown exponentially but our resolve must not break!
While my call for the disbandment of the Kennel Club and GSBA fell on deaf ears (I still hold my opinion that these archaic institutions need to go and that the rise of the students would mirror that of the French Revolution), I hope this message does not. Today is a new day. Today we embrace the adversity as Gonzaga fans. No more whining, no more fingerpointing. … IT'S OUR EVERYTHING OR NOTHING! God Bless and Roll Zags.
