Forward Kelly Olynyk makes the most out of an unexpected redshirt year

It's hard to miss 7-foot, 238-pound junior forward Kelly Olynyk, even when he's sitting on the Gonzaga bench during games. And odds are that you won't ever see him sitting for long. "In games, Kelly's the most energetic guy on our bench," redshirt junior Mike Hart said. 1 comment

5 Questions

Every week I will sit down with a different person and ask five questions that are on my mind. This week I had the pleasure of talking to Club Basketball President Derrick Hein. GB: Last Friday night was the Catalina Whine Mixer. How was the event and what are the funds raised going toward? DH: The event was a great opportunity to become closer as a team with all of our players and coaches working the dance and, of course, raise some money for the club.

That's some high quality H20

Managers are ‘just as much a part of this team as anybody else’

What if I told you the greatest job on campus required you to work 30 to 40 hours a week for the majority of the school year? What if I told you that same prime job allowed you to return home for a mere two days of Gonzaga's four-week Christmas break? What if I told you that the job description included doing several loads of sweaty laundry a week? What if I told you the greatest job on campus was unpaid? Some would rather apply to be on the custodial staff of CM.

Kennel Club fulfills its promise by having bigger impact on more Gonzaga sports than just basketball

ESPN's SportsCenter typically highlights what takes place on the court, but that's not to say there isn't room for passionate fans to make the show.  Gonzaga's Kennel Club packed a relatively large portion of the Martin Centre on Sept. 22 to support the volleyball team in its conference matchup with Loyola Marymount in an attempt to earn a few coveted moments on sports' signature show.

Zag snags Mariners Fan Outfits of the Year Award

It seemed simple enough. A group of friends were looking for their 15 seconds of fame, so they figured what better way to achieve it than getting on the big screen at Safeco Field. "If you want TV time, it seemed the most logical to us to dress like people who are on TV," sophomore Nathan Young from Oak Harbor said.

Picking up where they left off

Courtney Vandersloot was a "once-in-a-lifetime player" at Gonzaga, and her shoes are nearly impossible to fill.  But the Bulldogs have four viable options ready to step up and embrace the challenge of being Gonzaga's new point guard. Six-time West Coast Conference Coach of the Year Kelly Graves said the battle is among sophomores Jazmine Redmon, who backed up Vandersloot last season, Oregon State transfer Haiden Palmer, who was on the Pacific-10 Conference All-Freshman team, redshirt freshman Danielle Walter and true freshman Maiki Viela, who was named a PARADE magazine All-American in 2011 and a two-time Gatorade State Player of the Year in Hawaii.

ACL injuries tear through women’s soccer team

The Gonzaga women's soccer team has had an excellent first part of its season. After six official matches, the Zags present a 4-2 record, having played just one match at home. However, the great start has been partially overshadowed by long-lasting injuries that players have recently suffered.

A new way to run

Intramural department changes rules for club athletes

As the new intramural season quickly approaches, club athletes eager to participate in the myriad of events will be met with a new restriction. Facilities renovation underway

While the athletic facilities at Gonzaga are definitely above par, there is still room for improvement in many areas. Specifically, the installation of tennis courts and the completion of the soccer pitch. Trying to keep facilities up to date during an economic recession is a big challenge; despite that fact, the athletic department is still dedicated to the improvement and completion of facilities.

Sports AND Religion?

Are we ready to accept faith in college athletics? Would that be a good thing?

First and foremost I'd like to thank my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Right now you are probably rolling your eyes because you are expecting another commentary about how big my Tebowner is. But that is not going to be the case. As the Denver Broncos' season ended this past weekend to Ugg-boot-wearing Tom Brady and the Patriots, I got to reflect on what Tim Tebow's faith has done to the sports world.

Holiday hopes for hoopers

Beyond victories, what do members of the Gonzaga men’s basketball team want for Christmas?

While most Gonzaga students will be home sipping hot cocoa this Christmas vacation, the men's basketball team will play nine games over the break, nearly a third of its schedule. Besides a two-day break for Christmas, they will spend their time preparing to play ball, playing ball and resting from playing ball.

Reflecting on the weekend that was

Better Than Talking to Yourself

I must confess: I love Gonzaga basketball. Always have, always will. And, if this past weekend is an accurate depiction of how they'll play the rest of the season — and the next four years — I'm extremely excited for the era of Rainzaga.

Wanted: College football’s Dark Knight

Better Than Talking to Yourself

Alright, that's it, I have officially had enough. I can't idly sit by and keep ignoring the obvious. It's time we all just accept it: College football has officially become Gotham. "You either die a hero or live long enough to see yourself become the villain" former American hero turned psychopathic half-marshmallow Harvey Dent once said.

Proving your fanhood

The ins and outs of being a freshman basketball fan

Freshman year is a confusing time: "Where do I live?" "Who are these people?" "Should I destroy this upperclassman's house?" "Am I supposed to like this basketball team?" Most answers to the above situations vary. But the last question has only one answer, and that is abso-effing-lutely.

Embrace the villain

Better Than Talking to Yourself

I've said it before, and I'll say it again: Sportsmanship has no place in sport-ciety outside of U-10 soccer. My dedicated readers are probably wondering, "Does this guy have any other points? This is getting old." But lucky for me, I don't have any dedicated readers.

Let he who has skill, cast the first analysis

Better Than Talking to Yourself

Complaining about sports announcers is as old as the profession itself. "These guys are idiots, I could do their job way better than they ever could," said every sports fan ever. Calling a game is a lot like refereeing a game — you're never going to make everyone happy.

How to not be ‘that guy’

A few tips from a current referee to keep intramurals fun, competitive and safe for everyone

Over my four glorious years at Gonzaga, I have seen it all as an intramural referee. I have seen girls get trucked by ferocious males in flag football, last-second buzzer beaters kiss the nylon and softball bombs that nearly hit the ever-so-sacred COG.

Don’t fall in love with the hype

Better Than Talking to Yourself

The Gonzaga men's basketball team officially started the season last Friday when it held its first official practice. It's time to get excited, Zag fans! Are you thoroughly hyped-up? OK, good. Now, calm down. Don't get me wrong — I'm almost as excited about this year's team as I was about our squad my freshman year (aka the last year of the Pargo era) — this year's edition to the Mark Few era looks amazing on paper. 1 comment

No one owner should have all that power

Better Than Talking to Yourself

Who doesn't love a serious discussion about labor negotiations? Well, quite frankly, everyone. If you are like me, you have been completely ignoring the NBA's Collective Bargaining Agreement issues. Hey, David Stern, we legitimately cared about the labor stoppage ending five months ago when it was called the NFL Lockout.

May the power of Tebow compel you

As anyone who knows me will tell you, I live and breathe for Denver Broncos football. Since an abrupt fall from 6-0 grace under Josh McDaniels (don't mention that name to me) to start 2009, this living and breathing has mostly been of the desolate and downtrodden variety.

So you want to be a pro athlete ...

Better Than Talking to Yourself

What do you want to be when you grow up? It's a simple question that we've been asked our entire lives, and the answer is universally just as simple: professional athlete. The choice is simple if you think about it. You get paid boatloads of money to play a game — the same activity that the rest of the slobs in this country pay gym fees for.

‘You get what you pay for’

It’s time Zag fans wake up and realize Gonzaga has winning programs in all sports

The phrase, "You get what you pay for," implies many things. For instance, by attending Gonzaga, we get a better education and benefit from paying a higher tuition than other universities. The more you pay for something, the higher quality you expect in return.

Better Than Talking to Yourself

So I thought I could dance

A humbling tryout with the Dance Team

There are some (though very few) things that the male species was not made to do: sew, give birth to children, appreciate opera music, and most obviously, dance. Yet one of my goals for senior year is to try new things, so last week when I received a Facebook invite to audition for Gonzaga's Dance Team I decided, in spite of all reason, to go for it.

Far from the Best Coast

Better Than Talking to Yourself

It's time to face a cold, hard truth: There will not be a 2011-12 NBA season, and the West Coast will be hurt the most by its absence. "There's an East Coast bias when it comes to sports coverage." It's a common refrain we've heard all of our lives, but it makes more sense this year than ever.

Athletes: Once the career ends, then what?
