Wesley Yates, the No. 34 ranked 2023 recruit in the 247Sports Composite Ratings, announced he received an offer from Gonzaga on his Twitter account Monday.
The third-rated prospect in Texas, Yates has offers from 22 other programs, and has already visited Auburn, Washington and Stanford according to 247Sports.
The 6-foot-4, 200-pound shooting guard averaged 19.7 points, 4.0 rebounds, 2.8 steals and 2.0 assists while helping Beaumont United High School win the Texas 5A State Championship during his junior season.
A high-volume scorer, Yates had a 40-point game in the regional quarterfinals, and hit a game-tying 3-pointer that sent the game into a third overtime.
Just to get to overtime it took it took a Herculean effort from The. Wesley. Yates.40pts7/9 FT3-3’sA clutch basket to send the game into OT and a ice cold 3 to go to a 3rd OT! @BUBasketball2 @thewesleyyates_ pic.twitter.com/3pIVKobDVZ— jdsetxsports (@jdsetxsports) March 2, 2022
Yates excels as a pick and roll ball handler in Beaumont's offense, with the roll man usually being 6-foot-7 Houston commit and 2022 recruit Terrance Arceneaux.
Coming off screens, Yates tortures defenses with his ability to drive to the hoop, pull up for a 3-pointer or find an open man for an easy bucket.
His experience with the pick and roll could translate well at GU, a program that ran a heavy amount of pick and roll actions during the 2021-2022 season.
Yates' talent also stretches to the defensive end, where his frame allows him to play physical defense on the perimeter and in the paint. He also slides his feet well which helps him stay in front of quicker players.
With GU already missing out on two 2023 prospects, Mookie Cook and Jared McCain, hauling in Yates will be key if the Zags want to continue being a championship contender.
